Pete was previously Account Manager at Griffin Bacal Advertising, Group Production Manager at Orient-Express and Head of Production National Trust before co-founding Level in 2007. His past experience means he’s never fazed by a challenge and works across design and production projects from membership packs, books, visitor information, exhibition stands and POS.

When he’s not with his family and two Norwich Terriers, Pete is busy volunteering as Trustee of a large charity.

Ellie Firrell

Ellie graduated from UCA in 2010, joining Level straight away. Initially working on books for individual historic houses, she has quickly moved on to tackle anything we throw at her with a calm and creative approach to her design work.

At the weekend she can be found exploring exhibitions and fuelling up at food markets.

Sally Strutt

Sally spent 22 years at the British Library before setting up her historical research and writing business. She combines her fascination for painstaking historical detective-work with an insider’s knowledge of documents and where to find them, to bring to light the histories of country house estates. Sally applies rigorous academic standards to write each history from her original research, as well as sourcing all the illustrations.

Sally lives in rural Buckinghamshire with her husband and two sons. When not in dusty archives she can be found playing the historic pipe organ in her village church.


Bella Kraushaar
Project Manager

Bella studied geography at the University of Manchester and then went straight into organising travel expeditions for young people all around work the world. She worked as PA to the editor of the Guardian newspaper and then in fundraising at the British museum – highlights were meeting President Bush and taking Princess Margaret on a private tour of the museum. With the skills she has built up she now manages complex projects, the latest being for the National Garden scheme.

When she’s not working she loves to walk her two dogs and also enjoys painting watercolours and reading.

Matt Bourne
Partner and Design Director

Matt studied Graphic Fine Art, and worked at Phaidon, HarperCollins and the National Trust, before co-founding Level. He combines a passion for clearly conceived and thoughtful design, with a sound knowledge of materials and printing processes, seeing the details through to the finished article.

Matt draws and paints in his spare time, and helps out at a London food market on Saturdays.

James studied Graphic Communication, and worked at the agency Lime before joining the National Trust as Design and Visual Identity Manager and most recently Brand Identity Manager for the UAL, University of the Arts London. He has long established experience in creative project management and branding across print, digital and interpretation design. 

In his free time, James can be found speeding around the finest mountain bike trails the South East has to offer.

Nicola McKenzie

After graduating from the University of Leeds Nicola joined Lloyds of London to train in IT Development. Now an experienced Web Developer Nicola runs her own business but
also works in partnership with Level, delivering projects that combine creative design with technical know-how.

Nicola loves the outdoors and can often be found skating at her local ice rink.


Hazel Broadley

After studying German and Linguistics at the University of Reading, Hazel built up a career in PR & Marketing for a variety of clients within the technology and lifestyle sectors. With a passion for language and linguistics, she then became a full-time copywriter and content strategist. At Level, there is nothing she loves more than getting out her red pen and ensuring all client copy is consistent, concise and grammatically sound.

With two young children, weekends are usually spent walking or cycling in the forest.
